Website Planning & Internet Marketing Resources

It seems to me there is way to much “gut instinct” and personal opinion used in web site design and implementation.

To help redress this, I’ve created this page of links to articles, surveys and statistics that I find relevant to online marketing and web site production.

As these pages can be removed, please email me (jwebster@aimit.com.au) if you find any dead links.

Thank you.

Galaxy Report 2006 - Australian Online Search Habits

Network PR, a Sydney based public relation firm, commissioned Galaxy Research in July 06 to conduct a survey into Australians’ internet search habits.

The online survey, asked a series of questions of Australians aged 18-64 years with access to the internet.

Key findings include:

  • The internet is the most popular source of information about specific products or services, with 96% of respondents turning to the internet for this purpose.
  • When searching online for product and service information, 85% use a search engine with only 15% going directly to a known website.
  • The online population has a good understanding of the difference between natural (or 'organic') search results and sponsored or paid links, with 92% saying natural language results are more likely to be relevant.

Criteria for optimal web design (designing for usability)

You can attract people to your site with search engine optimisation techniques but if your site content is not user-friendly, your conversions rate will be affected - fewer people will take action to phone or email you.

This article reviews many of the issues that impact on a user-friendly website.

It is an older article, so the table of monitor resolutions is way out of date.  The basic principles still apply.

Cascading versus Indexed Menu Design

Site navigation using pop-out and drop-down menus has become extremely popular with web designers in recent years.

This is a study that assesses the effectiveness and user preferences of different styles of site navigation.  Perhaps this form of site navigation would be used less if more designers had read the study.

Submit Your Site to the Search Engines

Submitting a website to the major search engines is free.  The hard part can be finding where their submission form is hidden.

* You will need to open a free Yahoo account before you can access its submission form.

If you don’t know whether your site has been submitted before, enter this request in the search box to each of them, site:(your domain name)

Eg: site:mysite.com.au

Hope you find these resources useful.

John Webster
